Puppet TV
While process-based, Puppet TV offers an equally
valuable, long-lasting professional quality outcome.
Puppetry is a powerful communication tool for children and young
people. Through puppetry, participants often express themselves in new
ways, finding confidence in working through a puppet. Puppet TV is a
unique intensive workshop where participants design and make a puppet
to keep then collaborate to create a short film using these puppets.
PROCESS & APPROACH
through the film project planning
From Day 1, students are guided
process; brainstorming ideas,
identifying key scenarios relevant
to the theme and creating a
storyboard. The appointing of
groups and film production roles
within each group are essential
student opportunities to problem
solve, plan, analyze, and use
lateral thinking strategies

TECHNIQUE
Using puppetry in role-play, students
learn about themselves and their role
within the context of the key thematic
social issue being explored.
FILMING
The filming process reinforces the
importance of working with others,
listening, collaboration, and problem
solving. Each student has a vital role
to play in the production team from
puppeteer, to camera operator,
sound, light, or props person. Roles
rotate so all students can experience
the process from different
perspectives.
EVALUATION
After each filming session, students
watch the day’s takes and are guided
through a critical evaluation process.
Comparing and analyzing the
objectives laid out in the storyboard for
the scene, and what has been filmed.
Scenes may be filmed again with
adjustments identified and agreed by
the group.
FEEDBACK & REFLECTION
At the conclusion of the workshop, a
screening of the film gives the group
an opportunity to see and appreciate
their work. In a verbal feedback
session students are asked to discuss:
something surprising they learnt, one
thing they thought they did well, and
one thing they think they could
improve.
